Kunsthalle Prague AR Application
Prague's Kunsthalle exhibition hall launched an augmented reality (AR) application showcasing the building's history and current use.
The application, named after the original purpose of the site, a former electrical substation, brings technical artifacts called Jacks found during renovations to life through AR technology.
Challenge
Kunsthalle wanted to enhance visitor engagement by tying the building's electrical history to its current role as an art exhibition space. The challenge was to animate historical artifacts with a contemporary twist, ensuring an educational yet entertaining visitor experience without intruding on the quiet ambiance of the exhibition halls.
Solution
Partnering with artist David Kalika and utilizing augg.io technology, Kunsthalle Prague developed the 'Trafo' AR app, compatible with Android and iOS systems. The app features an animated robot guide inspired by porcelain artifacts from the substation archive, embodying human-like characteristics.
Results
The AR application features ten interactive stops within the gallery. It includes an animated film detailing the building's history, a virtual magic piano based on artist Zdeněk Pešánek's work, and a jukebox with songs from bands that played at the former underground club once located there. The app caters to all ages with activities like a toilet guard game for children and a memory card game using items from the archive.
The application has successfully provided visitors with an immersive experience, integrating historical elements with modern interactivity. By remaining operational only in publicly accessible areas, it preserves the tranquility of the exhibition spaces.
